Diving Thailands Similan Islands is something that should be on the top ten list of every SCUBA Diver. Welcome to some of the most spectacular diving on the planet. The Similan Islands are diveable from October until May. They are one of Thailands National Marine Parks and are predominantly uninhabited. Sporting secluded white sand beaches fringed with coconut palms as well as rocky coral fringed bays with a backdrop of mountainous jungle they are truly a spectacular sight. Offering many shallow and deep water diving sites they are a true divers playground. When not diving on many trips you have the opportunity to set foot on the deserted pristine ivory sands and explore. The number of dive sites available makes it impossible to see them all on a single trip so you are likely to return when you realize how spectacular and affordable diving can be in The Land Of Smiles.
Depending in how much time (and money) you have available you may also get to see the further Northern sites. These include Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, the famous Richelieu Rock and the Surin Islands. These sites are all north of the Similan Islands with Richelieu Rock and the Surin Islands being the furthest away. To dive these destinations as well as the Similan Islands you either need to spend a bit longer (usually 4 nights or more). Alternatively you can find a trip that dedicates itself just to the further northern dive sites. These sites offer larger pelagics and deep water dropoffs. Richelieu Rock in particular is noted for it's Whaleshark and Manta Ray sightings - these large spectacular docile creatures prefer the deeper water that these sites afford them.
Out of the October to May season the diving moves further south to Hin Daeng (Red Rock), Hin Muang (Purple Rock), Koh Ha (Five Islands) and around the Koh Phi Phi area. As the trade-winds change and the monsoon moves in from the west over the Indian Ocean the weather as well as Marine Park Permits restricts the diving on the exposed Similan Islands and further north. However in the more sheltered southern areas between Phuket and the mainland the diving is still excellent. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang offer deep water pinnacles that are popular with Whalesharks and Mantas. Koh Ha offers a variety of shallower coral sites and swimthroughs. All in all whatever time you choose to visit Thailand and dive you will not be dissapointed.
